SARAH COOKNEY ACADEMY OF DANCE

Sarah Cookney
Dance School Principal/Founder

Sarah Cookney is the Principal and Founder of Sarah Cookney Academy of Dance — SCAD — a long-standing Fish Hoek dance school that has helped nurture young performers in the South Peninsula community for more than three decades.

Sarah’s love for dance began at the age of six, and she went on to receive formal modern dance training under Brigitte Reeve and Michelle Reid. Her own competitive dance journey included winning the Western Province Junior and Intermediate Championships, placing second in the search for “Stars of Tomorrow,” and winning all sections in the finals of her age category. She opened her studio in 1991 with just 16 pupils, growing it into a school of more than 300 students.

A respected figure in the local dance community, Sarah is an examiner for the Cape Dance Association and holds an advanced teaching diploma through the A.I.D.T. She is also a member of the Western Province Dance Teachers Association, Cape Dance Association, and played a role in helping Dance Studies become part of Fish Hoek High School’s offering.

Sarah’s choreographic work spans competitions, school productions and major musical theatre pieces, including productions such as Grease, Joseph, West Side Story, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, The Boyfriend, Annie, Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Chicago, Hairspray, Peter Pan, The King and I, Aladdin, Jane, Mulan, Narnia “the Lion the witch and the wardrobe”, Robin Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Revolting, How to train your Dragon and Frozen. She has also choreographed Fish Hoek Primary School performances, including work that won first prize at the V&A Waterfront competition for three consecutive years. Most recently Sarah took a team to the 2025 Grahamstown Arts Festival and won a prestigious Standard Bank Ovation Award.

Her training and artistic development have taken her internationally, including dance classes in New York and Dallas at institutions such as Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham and Broadway, as well as conventions with world-renowned choreographers including Mia Michaels, Wade Robson, Shane Sparks, Dave Scott and Tyce Diorio. Sarah has received numerous choreography awards, including Best Choreography at Eisteddfod and Adjudicators’ Choice at the Cape Dance Festival, and has won 20 sections across the Cape Town Eisteddfod and Cape Dance Festival.

Today, Sarah continues to lead SCAD as a space where dancers are trained not only in technique, but in confidence, performance, discipline and creative expression. SCAD’s productions have become a regular part of the local arts landscape, with shows such as Remember the Time and Circle of Life showcasing dancers from age 5 through to adults, while also supporting causes such as Dancers Love Dogs.
